HOW TO PLAY. Butterfly Kyodai follows the rules of mahjong connect games.

The object is to clear the board as quickly as possible by clicking unblocked, matching pairs of butterflies. To begin, click the START GAME button on the title screen.

BLOCKED VS. UNBLOCKED. Two butterflies of the same species can be connected and removed from the board if:

(1) an open path exists between them, and

(2) the path has no more than 2 right-angle turns (that is, 0, 1, or 2 corners only).

To remove a pair of butterflies, click the first butterfly, then click the other. A red line connecting the two butterflies displays, as shown in the image below.

The connected butterflies then flit away gracefully. Don't be distracted by them, because this kyodai mahjong game is devious. It may be relaxing to watch butterflies in flight, but the timer is still ticking!

The simplest matching pair is when same-species butterflies are located next to each other. This can occur on the edge of the board or somewhere in the middle.

Because they are easy to spot, I usually look for these simple pairs first, to help clear out the center of the board. An alternative strategy might be to save some of these obvious matches for later, when you might need some quick matches to pump up the timer.

At the beginning of the game, the other type of available pair can occur along one side of the board. Butterflies on different sides of the board cannot be connected, because the path would require three right-angle turns (which is not allowed).

AUTOMATIC RESHUFFLING. I'm aware of one possible glitch in this game, although it might be working as designed. A visitor named Tracey reported to me that the game automatically reshuffles the mahjong tiles sometimes.

However, another visitor, Frannie, later contacted me to say the game reshuffles "when there aren't remaining pairs to match." So that would explain why the game reshuffles the tiles sometimes like that. I haven't seen it myself, but it might happen when you play.

LANGUAGE. This game can be played in any of 20 different languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Swedish. Select your preferred language from the pull-down menu on the main title screen.

TIMER. Pay attention to the timer as you clear matching pairs. The timer is the horizontal blue bar located in the upper left area of the game screen. If the timer reaches zero, it's game over and the Time Out screen appears. To restart the game, click the PLAY AGAIN button on the Time Out screen.

Each time you clear a matching pair of butterflies, a small amount of time is added to the timer. This rewards you for clearing pairs quickly.

TIPS. If you get stuck and time is running out, click the TIPS button. This displays a hint on the board. Red squares are shown around an available matching pair of butterflies. You get 3 hints per game.

RESET. Another alternative if you get stuck is to reshuffle the board. Reshuffling mixes the existing butterflies.

It does not reload a full board of butterflies, and it does leave open the spaces you've already cleared. You get 3 resets per game.

SCORES: The Scores box keeps track of the number of pairs you've removed from the board.

PAUSE. If you need to stop this kyodai mahjong game for a few minutes, click the Pause button in the upper right corner. Click the Resume button to continue the game.

The more you play this beautiful butterfly kyodai game, the faster you'll be able to spot available pairs. This increase in skill is evidence that your concentration and visual perception may be improving through practice.

So, if at first you don't succeed, don't get frustrated. Just keep playing!
